What's the best way to record an electric guitar with as little noise from a distortion pedal as possible?
I hate direct in sounds, placing the Mic slightly behind the amp is actually quite cool. Placing it in front of the grill and putting a blanket over both the mic and the amp is the classic solution, you can play with distance and volume and such.
Do a Google search for home recording electric guitar to see what comes up.
Remember to use less distortion on the guitar than you want in the recording. In my experience, the distortion is always amplified in recordings.
Should I use a condenser or dynamic microphone on the amp?
you should always start with a shure sm57 to close mic the speaker, or, the best sounding speaker in the cabinet if it has multiple speakers. Position and angle really depend on the type of sound you are looking for. to get more of the room sound, you could use a condenser further back. There are other good options for recording in a place where you can't crank up your amp. look at the palmer speaker simulator, the webber line of products, and look into a guitar iso cabinet. It's a speaker cab you plug your head or combo amp into and it already has adjustable mic clips in it. The good ones can absorb thirty db or more when used properly. Most of the floor processors and such sound like crap, even the newer ones that use 32 bit floating point processing. However, the Digidesign Eleven rack is an exception. Look into that. it's not cheap, but, it's a great sounding unit! Sansamp also has a line of pedals that have characteristics of various vintage and modern amps. They sound pretty good direct.
Good luck.
Hi,
You could also try reamping. I don't know how advanced you are as far as recording, but you would run your guitar in to a direct box. Or, if your running a pedal board, you would run the guitar in to your board, and throw the output of the board in to the direct box. Then you would run one output of the direct box in to an amp, and the other in to a snake. Then, you would use a small diafram dynamic on your amp to mike it up, but you would also have your clean signal that is not effected by your amp. The clean signal tends to have more attack, but when you blend your dry and wet signals, you get a really nice warm tone.
Hope this helps,
Chris
As u are probably starting to discover there is a million ways to do this and its all about taste. Personally i disagree with cameron and have to to say the PODX3 and the latest gen POD HD stuff sounds are great for going direct. As for am amp it's less about the mics used an dmore about how th emics are used. Get your face infront of that amp and move your head around and find where it sounds the best then put a mic in that spot . Yeah the SM57 is the standard used for this, but play around with the placement of whatever mic you have at your disposal.Personally i am not a fan of the 57 and never really used one much as such. Also check out some of th enumerous home recording podcasts as well. Home recording show is a good one to start with, and the recordingrevolution.com is a good blog to keep up with.
I did not like the x3 or the xt live direct. However, I would be willing to check out the pod hd. The waves gtr sounds quite good, however, like with the other waves plugs, there is little to no accessibility at this time which is a shame. hsc can only go so far... I still think that the Eleven rack is the king of modeling right now, but, it ain't cheap.
Wsup:
I've been playing for about 14 years, and have done some recording here and there via Microphone placement and Amp settings. Improvising can get you pretty far, especially with editing programs...
Anyways, I have a sirius question. I have a DegiTech RP255 Effects pedal, which has a USB port for connecting to the computer... Now, I went to the DegiTech website, downloaded there driver, Installed it, then jacked in. Now, I'm using JAWS 12.0, and when I plugged in, all of a sudden, I don't have any Text to Speach anymore. I tryed launching narator, just to be sure that JAWS didn't just crash, and I didn't get any speach then either.
My question is, Does anyone know what I need to do? Like, are there some sort of settings I'm supposed to mess with or something. Also note, that granted I been playing awile, Everything I know is pretty much self tought, so, I am lacking in the accademics on studio recording and home recording and such... But I will be going to colledge next semester to work for a degree in music business, and I plan on milking all the music studies I can for as much knolledge as I can get.
Usually, I use GoldWave for my editing and recording needs, but I'm sick of mic placement and fighting with all of that. I have had this pedal for a few years, and am just now getting around to recording with it propperly. If anyone would have some ideas on how to resolve this issue, Please feel free to reply, or PM me... I'd be Extremely thankful.
Thanks a Million,
Dragon
Puff, puff:
NVM... Figured it out the other day. It was my soundcard settings...
Anyways. New problem. Anyone know of any JFW Accessible virtual semphosisers, or at the very least, Virtual Drum Machines?
PM me if you have any info, or just reply here. I'll get it avintually...
Thanks.
